I always make sure I carry a microfiber cloth in my camera bag for the times I need to clean my lens.
The microfiber cloth also does an excellent job of removing smudges from the LCD screen on my digital cameras.
Cloth made from other material is not as effective at lifting of smudges.
If you intend to stick with the Nikon brand for the sake of it, this Nikon microfiber cleaning cloth should fit the bill nicely.
Before wiping the front element of the lens, I make it point to blow off any dust particles or grit using a product similar to the Giottos Rocket Blaster.
